The National Assembly has approved the Government’s proposal to increase the validity of e-visas for foreigners to 90 days from the current 30 days.

The new policy is part of the Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese Citizens and Foreigners’ Entry into, Exit from, Transit through and Residence in Viet Nam adopted by legislators on June 24.

The Law is scheduled to become effective since August 15, 2023.

Under the law, the Government shall be empowered to decide on a list of countries and territories whose citizens are eligible for grant of e-visas and a list of international border gates that allow foreigners to enter and exit with e-visas.

During their visa validity, foreigners can arrive and leave Viet Nam for several times, without applying for a new visa.

Citizens of countries that are unilaterally exempted from visas by Viet Nam to be granted temporary residence for 45 days as opposed to the current 15 day regulations and be considered for visa issuance and temporary residence extension according to regulations.

Viet Nam currently offers e-visas to citizens of 80 countries and territories and waives visa for nationals of 25 countries, mostly for between 15-30 days.

The easing of e-visa policy both in terms of applicable subjects and duration will help attract more foreigners to visit the country and seek investment and business opportunities, creating a driving force to promote socio-economic development in general and the tourism industry in particular.

According to Law No.51/2019/QH14, point a Clause 1 Article 13 provides the following: “The duration of temporary residence is equal to the duration of the visa; in case the visa has a DL category for a period of over 30 days and considered for extension of temporary residence as prescribed in Article 35 of this law.”

The law clearly states that foreigners who enter Vietnam with a DL (tourist) visa, if the visa is valid for 1 month, they will be granted a 1-month temporary residence stamp on the visa, if the visa is for a period of 3 months, the temporary residence stamp is only issued for 1 month from the date of entry and want to stay and consider extending the temporary residence as prescribed. So the law is very suitable and limits the subjects who take advantage of tourist visas to work and work illegally in Vietnam.

Viet Nam will renew visa exemptions for a three-year period for the citizens of five Western European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy from the first day of July 2018 for a three-year period.

The decision was approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the regular Government meeting on May 3.

The information was revealed by the Minister, Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung at the regular press conference of the Vietnam Government yesterday.

Accordingly, citizens from the five aforementioned countries will continue to enjoy visa exemptions to enter Vietnam up to 2020 after the expiration of the visa-free policy in June this year.

The PM said that Viet Nam should continue to expand its visa-exemption policy as the country has unilaterally offered visa exemptions for citizens from only 24 countries, including nine ASEAN countries.

Earlier last month, the Viet Nam Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) proposed the Government to increase the length of exempted stay for tourists to 30 days instead of granting 15-day visa.

It also recommended to increase the number of visa exempt countries and in particular to add Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Belgium.

In 2015, Viet Nam welcomed 720,000 western European tourists. The number increased 19 percent in 2016 and doubled to 1.5 million in 2017.

Visitors from these countries increased by 5.5-16.8% in the first four months of this year, accounting for 6.6 percent of all foreign arrivals to Viet Nam, according to official statistics.

More than 5.5 million foreign visitors arrived in Viet Nam in the first four months of this year, up a staggering 29.5% over the same period last year, according to the latest report from the General Statistics Office.

The country is among countries with the strictest visa policy in Asia. The country currently offers visa waivers to visitors from only 22 countries and territories including ASEAN co-members.
