Under the current law, visitors from these countries can stay for no longer than 15 days in Vietnam without a visa. The law went into effect on June 18 last year and comes to an end on June 30 this year.

The ministry said that the move had attracted more tourists but large travel enterprises remained hesitant to promote tours to Vietnam before more preferential policies are issued. They said the government should increase visa exemption period to 30 days as well and shift the deadline to 2020.

The ministry added that after 10 months of visa exemptions, visitor numbers from the five countries have witnessed significant growth. Over the nine-month period since July 2015, the number of visitors increased by 13.91 percent on year to touch more than 550,000, according to data from Vietnam’s General Statistics Office.

A survey by the General Department of Tourism estimated that each visitor spends about $1,300 in Vietnam. The increase of visitors from the five countries due to changes in visa exemptions brought Vietnam more than $171 million.

The ministry also suggested that Vietnam should grant visas at border gates or deliver electronic visas to attract more visitors.

(*) Period of Stay

The period of stay granted at the time of the landing permission will be “15 days” for Brunei, Indonesia, and Thailand, and “90 days” for other countries and regions.

(Note1)　For nationals of Indonesia (since December 1, 2014), visas are not required only for those who have registered ICAO-compliant ePassport to diplomatic missions of Japan in Indonesia (the embassy, consulates-general, or the consulate). Validity of the registration is three years period or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

(Note2)　For nationals of Malaysia (since July 1, 2013), visas are not required only for holders of ePassport in compliance with ICAO standards. Those who do not hold such ePassport are advised to obtain a visa in advance, otherwise will be strictly examined and may be refused entry to Japan.

(Note3)　For nationals of Thailand (since July 1, 2013), visas are not required only for holders of ePassport in compliance with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards.

(Note4)　For citizens of Hong Kong, visas are not required only for holders of Special Administrative Region (SAR) passport issued by the Hong Kong SAR of the People’s Republic of China or British National Overseas (BNO) passports who have the right of residence in Hong Kong.

(Note5)　For citizens of Macao, visas are not required only for holders of SAR passport issued by the Macao SAR of the People’s Republic of China.

(Note6)　For citizens of Taiwan, visas are not required only for holders of Taiwan passport which includes a personal identification number.

(Note7)　For nationals of Barbados (since April 1, 2010), Turkey (since April 1, 2011) and Lesotho (since April 1, 2010), visas are not required only for holders of Machine-Readable Passport (MRP) or ePassport in compliance with ICAO standards. Those who do not hold an MRP or ePassport are advised to obtain a visa in advance, otherwise will be strictly examined and may be refused entry to Japan.

(Note8)　For nationals of those countries with visa exemptions permitting stays of up to 6 months under the bilateral visa exemption arrangements, those who wish to stay in Japan for more than 90 days are required to apply for an extension of the period of stay to the Ministry of Justice (Regional Immigration Bureau) before the period of permitted stay is to expire.

(Note9)　Nationals of Peru (since July 15, 1995) and Colombia (since February 1, 2004), are advised to obtain a visa in advance, otherwise will be strictly examined and may be refused entry to Japan.

General Visa exemptions

+ Commercial heavy-duty vehicle drivers who

The same principle applies to Zimbabwean commercial heavy-duty truck drivers, except that their sojourn may not exceed 30 days at a time. The afore-mentioned does not apply to commercial heavy-duty truck drivers who transport goods for a South African transport company. Such drivers must be in possession of a valid work permit.

+ Staff members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) who

     –  travel on SADC laissez-passers

–  travel on bona fide official business

–  and stay for 90 days or less, or are in transit

+Holders of UN laissez- passers who

     –  intend to visit South Africa for 90 days or less

–  visit the country for official business purposes

–  are in transit

–  are accredited for placement at a UN mission in South Africa for the duration of their accreditation

–  are volunteers attached to UN agencies and travelling on ordinary passports, provided they are in possession of relevant letters or identification documents to identify themselves at ports of entry as personnel of an UN agency.

*  Holders of United Nations Laissez-passers

*  Volunteers attached to the UN

*  Persons involved in any United Nations agency

*  Persons performing services on behalf of the UN

Members of military forces attending any military related matters with the South African National Defense Force are exempt from visa and study permit requirements; irrespective of their duration of stay provided they are in possession of letters of invitation from SANDF as well as letters of consent from the military force of which they are members.

Nationals of the following countries do not require a visa for visits up to a maximum of 90 days, for tourism, on missions, business, invitations, ought to take part in sports events, study:

Citizens of Taiwan exemption from visa obligation is applied exclusively to holders of passports with identity card number included.

Citizens of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, and Serbia are exempt from visa obligation only if the passport contains biometric data.

Nationals of San Marino, the Holy See and Switzerland do not require a visa in any case.

A China visa is a permit issued by Chinese visa authorities (Chinese Embassies, Chinese Consulates, Chinese visa offices or Public Security Bureau) to non-Chinese citizens for entry into and transit through China mainland (Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR have different visa systems). Citizens of most countries are required to obtain Chinese visas before entering China mainland. After the new Chinese Immigration Law and the new Foreigner Entry-Exit Administration Regulations took into effect respectively on July 1, 2013 and Sep. 1, 2013, there are 12 categories of ordinary China visas, which are marked with the letters C (crew visa), D (permanent residence visa), F (for persons engaged in exchanges, visits, inspections), G (transit visa), J (journalist visa), L (tourist visa), M (business visa), Q (Chinese family reunion), R (for high-level talents), S (foreign family visit), X (student visa) and Z (work visa).
J, Q, S, X respectively have two subcategories, e.g. J1, J2, X1, X2.
X1 will be issued to persons for long-term study. X2 will be issued to persons for short-term study. The same is true with J, Q and S visas.

2. Do I need a Chinese visa?

If you want to travel to Mainland China, whether for business or tourism, you are required to have a Chinese visa obtained from a consulate in advance of your trip.
You are exempt from applying for a Chinese visa if you travel and stay only in Hong Kong or Macao for some days.

3. I got the China visa at the embassy in Vietnam. What does this visa mean?

CATEGORY: L (tourist visa or visiting relatives) – there are other types, such as X (student visa), Z (work visa)
ENTRIES: 01 – there are other types, such as 02, M (multiple) and 00.
DURATION OF EACH STAY: 090 – there are other types, such as 030, 060, 120, 180.
ENTER BEFORE: 23FEB2006 and ISSUE DATE: 23NOV2005: 3-month visa

If you enter into China mainland before Feb. 23, 2006, you can use this visa. The 90 days of duration of stay is calculated right when you enter into China mainland through customs. Suppose you enter on Jan. 3, 2006, the visa is valid until April 2, 2006.

And if you want to go to Hong Kong and return to China mainland on Feb. 12, 2006, you cannot use this visa though it is still ENTER BEFORE Feb. 23, 2006. The only 1 entry has been used up the first time you enter. If it were a 02-entry visa, you would use it again.

4. With an F visa, what can I do in China?

F visa is issued to applicants who are invited to China for research, lecture, scientific-technological and culture exchanges.
Before you can do business with an F visa. After Sep. 1, 2013, if you want to do business, please apply for an M visa.

5. I am going to mainland China, then to Hong Kong and back to mainland China. Does this mean I must have a double-entry visa?

Yes. Although Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR are part of China, they have different visa systems from China mainland. Each time you enter into China mainland, one entry will be used up.

6. If I want to stay longer in China, can I have my visa done without leaving China mainland？

Yes.
If you are holding an L visa, technically you can have it extended for another 30 days.

The visas issued when you are already in China mainland have NO limitation of each stay. It means if you wish, you can stay as long as your visa duration without leaving. The entry (ies) is for your expected or unexpected travel. You don’t have to leave.

7. If I want to do business in China, can you help me?

Yes. We can provide you an official M visa invitation letter. With it, you can apply in your country for 3-month M visa. If you previously had business visas, we can even help you get 6-month, 1-year M visa invitation letters.

8. I have a double/multi-entry Visa, but have 60 days limit for each stay. How can I stay longer?

Double or multiple entry visas (either an L, F or M) issued by overseas Chinese Embassies, Consulates, visa offices usually have limitations of each stay. How can I stay longer without leaving?
You can apply for an extension of stay at Public Security Bureau. Your previous L, F or M will NOT be cancelled. The extension of the visa stay period by PSB is only effective for this entry into China. It does not affect the number of authorized entries or duration of each stay. Extension of the visa stay period will not exceed the stay period granted on visa.
It is a big improvement as before Sep. 1, 2013 when you extended your visa, your current visa would be cancelled at the same time, whatever how many entries left.

9. How can I get the “Registration Form of Temporary Residence”, which is required to do visa extension or conversion?

Foreigners are required to register in the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. When you get a new visa or move to a new place, you need to redo it.
If you are staying at a hotel or hostel, the staff there will automatically do it for you. If you ask, they will give you the form. Please make sure they stamp it with the hotel or hostel’ seal.
If you are renting an apartment or staying with your friends, you need to go to the local police station yourself. Normally, you are required to take the following documents:
* Apartment rental contract
* Passport
* For the first time registration, you’d better ask your landlord to come with you. Or at least take one copy of the landlord’s ID.

10. There is some company that intends to employ me. Can I avoid the Hong Kong visa run to get a Z visa? Or can I outsource the application to you to make it more efficient and quicker?

Yes, you can. Please find the documents required to do the whole China work visa application(including work license, invitation letter, Z visa, Alien Employment Permit and Residence Permit for work application).

11. How and where to do the health check for the China work visa application?

There is only one place in Beijing that alien employees can get the health check reports for the China work visa application. 

Accordingly, dossiers required for foreigners who are spouses, children of Vietnamese residing abroad or Vietnamese citizen to apply are different from documents required for person of Vietnamese origin. Thus, Vietnam-legal.com would like to give requirements for family members of overseas Vietnamese or Vietnamese citizens as below:

1.  One completed Application Form for a Certification of Visa Exemption,

2.  Two recent photographs (size 4×6, with white background, without glasses or headwear), of which should be attached to the Application Form,

4.  Dossiers determining the relationship with a Vietnamese citizen or a person of Vietnamese origin residing abroad include one of the following:

One photocopy of each document is required for record at the Embassy/ Immigration Department.
