New Zealand Introduciton

GEOGRAPHY

Located in Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is made up of two major islands aptly named the North (Te-Ika-a-Maui in Maori) and South Islands (Te Wai Pounamu in Maori), with the smaller Stewart Island located south of the South Island. New Zealand is slightly smaller than both Italy and Japan and is only little bit larger than the United Kingdom.

Approximately 75% of New Zealand’s population call the North Island home with major cities like Auckland, and the capital Wellington being located there. Known for its volcanism, volcanoes have been erupting here since 232AD. The tallest mountain on the North Island, Mount Ruapehu, is an active volcano cone and Lake Taupo, NZ’s largest lake is the result of the Oruanui eruption, the world’s largest known eruption in 70,000 years.

The South Island accommodates approximately 25% of New Zealand’s population and is home to many mountains. The island is divided lengthwise by the Southern Alps, the tallest being Aoraki/Mount Cook (3754m). There are an additional 18 peaks around the island each standing more than 3000m tall. To the east of the island is the Canterbury Plains and the west coast houses the incredible Fox and Franz Josef glaciers.

WEATHER & CLIMATE

Best time to visit:

Ever since the Maori christened New Zealand ‘The Land of the Long White Cloud’, weather has featured in the minds of local people. Sat in the middle of the Roaring Forties (a region with strong westerly winds), New Zealand enjoys an ocean temperate climate, making it pleasant most of the year round with occasional periods of cool, rain and wind.

There is, however, a wide range of conditions from north to south, with subtropical weather in the north and more temperate conditions in the south. Generally, the north has no extremes of heat or cold; winter can be quite cool in the south, with snow in the mountains. The eastern areas often experience drought conditions in summer; the west, particularly in the South Island, has more rain.

New Zealand’s seasons are directly opposite to those of the northern hemisphere although it’s often possible to have all four represented in one day. Spring (September/October) is beautiful as new blooms emerge, yet the peaks stay snow-capped; summer (November to March) enjoys the best overall weather; autumn (March/April) is a time of spectacular colours, especially on the South Island; winters (April/May to August September) tend to be wet and cool. There’s great winter skiing in the centre of the North Island and in the South Island’s Southern Alps, where heli-skiing is particularly popular. The best time to visit, taking into account the climate, crowds and other conditions, is October/November or March/April.

TOURISM

New Zealand must be the luckiest tourist country in the world. It has spectacular mountains, active volcanoes, deep fiords, rugged coastlines, picturesque lakes, streams and beaches, bubbling mudpools, geysers, a unique Maori culture and warm hospitality.
