Amazing Ghana!!

LOCATION

Ghana is located on the west coast of Africa. It is bounded on the north by Burkina Faso, on the west by La Cote D’Ivoire, on the east by Togo and on the south by the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean). Tema, the industrial city, which is adjunct to Accra, the capital city of Ghana, is on the Greenwich Meridian (zero line of longitude), making Ghana the closet landmark to the centre of the world.

GEOGRAPHY

Ghana is not a mountainous country, but has some highlands and some steep escarpments in the middle portions and isolated places in the northern parts. The land is relatively flat and the altitude is generally below 500m, with more than half of the country below 200m.

The Volta River basin dominates the country’s river system and includes the 8480 km2 Lake Volta (the largest artificial lake in the world), formed behind the Akosombo hydro-electric dam. The coastal area consists of plains and numerous lagoons near the estuaries of rivers. In terms of vegetation, the north is predominantly savannah and the middle section (extending to the south – western part) is typical rainforest, while the coastal section has thicket interspersed with savannah.

CLIMATE

Ghana has a tropical climate. The temperature is generally between 21-35 Celsius degree. There are two rainy seasons, from March to July and from September to October, separated by a short cool dry season in August and a relatively long dry season in the south from mid-October to March. The north, also with tropical climate, is dry and falls partly within the Sahelian zone.

Annual rainfall in the south averages 2,030 mm, but varies greatly throughout the country, with the heaviest rainfall in the south –western part.

TOURISM

Ghana is and has always been known for it’s wide range of tourist attractions and facilities.

For the traveler, Ghana is that latter-day unknown, unexplored and certainly an unexploited destination which abounds in an unbelievable array of striking attractions, distinctive and peculiar to each of the ten regions in Ghana.

LANGUAGE

English is the official language of Ghana and is universally used in schools in addition to nine other local languages. The most widely spoken local languages are Ga, Dagomba, Akan and Ewe.

RELIGION

Traditional religions accounts for two-fifths of the population. The Christian population also accounts for two-fifths of the total population and includes Roman Catholics, Baptist, Protestants, etc. The Muslim population (12 percent of the total) is located chiefly in the northern part of the country.

EDUCATION

Primary and secondary education is free and compulsory in Ghana between the ages of 6 and 14. In 1996, 76 percent of primary school-aged children were enrolled in school. Secondary schools enrolled just 31 percent of the appropriately aged children. Vocational and teacher-training institutions had 38,000 students. Higher education is provided by the University of Ghana (1948), in Legon (near Accra); the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (1951), in Kumasi; the University of Cape Coast (1962); and the University for Development Studies (1992), in Tamale. Total university enrollment was about 9,600 in the early 1990s.
